Signed by Chris Coleman, Stephen arrived with a record of injuries which had blighted his career. Stephen was on Liverpool’s books as a youngster, despite being an Everton fan and was signed as a professional at Anfield in 1997. Originally a central defender he made his debut in 2000 and played four games in his first season. Switched the right-back the following season he made 17 appearances and scored his one and only goal for the Reds, against Borussia Dortmund. That season Wright played six times for England under-21s.

In 2002 Peter Reid signed ‘Wrighty’ for Sunderland, paying £1.5 million with add-ons. It was a disastrous season for the Black Cats – relegated from the Premier League with only four wins and nineteen points and Wright’s form, initially bright, was like most of the team’s, poor. A committed, combative full-back, he helped Sunderland regain their Premier League status in 2005 but knee and ankle injuries thwarted him over the next two years and last season he spent five months on loan at Stoke for whom he played 17 games. After returning to Sunderland in January he failed to regain a first-team place in Roy Keane’s side and his contract expired. Injuries blighted his first season at Coventry but his experience was a key factor in the side’s good form after Christmas when he performed well at right-back and in central defence.
