Butcher was brought to Coventry from Glasgow Rangers as player-manager to replace John Sillett in November 1990. His illustrious playing career with Ipswich, Rangers and England was coming to a close as a result of knee problems. An imposing centre-half who won 77 England caps and appeared in three World Cup tournaments, Terry was a stalwart in Bobby Robson’s Ipswich team which twice finished runners up in the league and won the UEFA Cup in 1981.
Graeme Souness took him to Rangers where he had four very successful years as the ‘Gers dominated football north of the border. As manager of City he had the enviable task of clearing out many of the 1987 heroes and some were jettisoned too soon. He rarely looked fit as a player and was sent off in his final game against Villa in the Full Members Cup. In January 1992 after refusing to take a pay cut following his retirement as a player he was sacked but successfully won a High Court action for compensation.
He later managed Sunderland briefly and was out of the game for nine years running a hotel in Scotland before becoming manager of Motherwell in 2002. He led ‘Well to a Scottish Cup final in 2005 but a year later was appointed manager of Australian club Sydney FC. The Aussie job was shortlived and he then briefly managed Brentford before a more successful spell back north of the border with Inverness Caledonian Thistle. He also managed Hibernian, Newport County and the Philippines.
