Tony Knapp
When George Curtis broke his leg at Nottingham Forest in the club’s second game in Division One Jimmy Hill had to quickly buy a stop-gap and he plumped for the former Leicester and Southampton stopper who was out of favour at the Dell. A fee of £25,000 secured his services but his career at Highfield Road was short and sweet. The defence shipped goals and after only eleven games Hill’s replacement signed Maurice Setters to play in that position.
Knapp moved to California in March 1968, to play for Los Angeles Wolves and returned to England in 1969 ending his career with brief spells at Bristol City and Tranmere. He turned to coaching and had success as assistant to Ron Saunders at Norwich and then in Norway and Iceland including two spells as coach of the Icelandic National Team. After retirement, Tony lived in Norway.Â
