Scotland U21, 4 caps, 2 goals

Although born in Scotland he was brought up in Coventry and joined City from school. His youthful promise earned the 18-year old midfielder a first team call deputising for Terry Yorath in 1978 and he performed so well he kept his place and Yorath was sold. In 1980-81 he was inspirational in the League Cup run and his form won him five Scottish Under 21 caps and attracted the interest of league champions Aston Villa who paid £300,000 for him. His stay at Villa was not a success and he rejuvenated his career at Sheffield
Wednesday.
In 1985 he scored a hat-trick of penalties in the Owls 4-2 League Cup win over Luton. A move back to Villa in 1986 was no more successful than the first spell and a knee iniury ended his top-class career. He subsequently played for Northampton, Naxxar in Malta and Kidderminster Harriers before trying his hand at management with Racing Warwick. He is a successful businessman in the Coventry area and his son Matty played for several local teams before entering the Football League most notably with Doncaster Rovers.
