Jones was signed as a player by Gordon Milne in the summer of 1979. City paid Everton £250,000 for the England under 21 central defender who had played almost 100 games for the Toffees. It was a disastrous move for the Scouser who was played at full back in most of his 12 appearances for the club. The form of Gary Gillespie and Jim Holton and then later Paul Dyson meant he couldn’t play in his favourite position. Dave had a couple of stinkers for City but was in central defence the night that City won at Old Trafford in the League Cup in 1980. Jones went on loan to Seiko in Hong Kong and later signed permanently before finishing his playing career at Preston.

Since moving into management in the 1990s he has had great success with Stockport,  and managed Southampton in the Premier League until he became embroiled in unsubstantiated child abuse charges. He took Wolves to promotion to the Premier League but couldn’t keep them up and was boss at Cardiff from 2005 to 2011.
