Former Windmill Road pupil Derek was a young goalkeeper coming through the ranks at Coventry City when he was given his first-team debut in very strange circumstances. On 19 April 1952 City had a massive game against Sheffield Wednesday that they had to win to stay in Division Two and Wednesday need to win to gain promotion. First team goalkeeper Billy Gilbert reported the ground with a shoulder injury and the reserve Peter Taylor was at Norwich with the reserve team. Derek, who had played only a few reserve team games, was thrown in to the big game for his debut. Unfortunately City lost 0-2 and were relegated, though no blame was attached to Derek.

The following season he played 22 games but never appeared again after that. In 1954 he joined Lockheed Leamington and later played for Banbury Spencer.
