Yorkshire-born Don grew up in West London and was a prodigious sporting schoolboy. He joined the Lords groundstaff at the age of 16 and went on to make almost 400 appearances for Middlesex over 18 seasons as a right-handed middle order batsman and medium fast bowler. Football was his second love and he spent eight winters as a regular in Arsenal's reserve team before Billy Frith signed him for City. A full-back, Don always started the season late owing to his cricket commitments and was never photographed in the pre-season team picture. After retiring from cricket in 1968 he became a coach. and was responsible for Middlesex first XI until his retirement in 1997.
