A tall, stocky inside-forward who had been a member of the Great Britain football squad at the 1960 Olympic Games and had a name for himself at Coleraine, Ballymena and Linfield. Although he spent just one season at Linfield, he was an integral part of the side that completed a clean-sweep of seven trophies and his return of 46 goals in 50 games made him the league’s top goalscorer. Jimmy Hill swooped to sign him for City in the summer of 1962. He made his debut against Notts County in the first team to wear sky blue (and scored). A vital member of City’s FA Cup giantkilling team that season, Hugh wanted to be a school-teacher and play football on a part-time basis. Hill could not accept this and Barr moved to Cambridge United where he was able to fulfil his ambitions. He was later part-time player-manager at Ely City and a Geography teacher in Cambridgeshire into his 60s. He now lives back in Northern Ireland.
