Jay was a star of Arsenal’s youth team and played in their FA Youth Cup final victory over City in 2000. Sacked by Arsenal for throwing his shirt down after being substituted in a youth game he was signed by Gordon Strachan that summer. A striker of undoubted talent but questionable motivation and a suspect temperament Jay made a handful of appearances during the relegation season but started the following season as first choice striker with Lee Hughes. His best season was 2002-03 when he finished as top scorer with 11 goals, many of them spectacular efforts. He joined Italian club Perugia in 2003 and had two seasons in Italy punctuated by a loan at Premiership Blackburn. He returned to England and played for Charlton, Wolves, Stoke on loan and then a successful spell across the border with Cardiff (which earned him and England cap). Brief stints at QPR and Sheffield Wednesday followed before going overseas for productive spells in Thailand and Japan. He is now a regular pundit on Sky Sports.
