Son of Bobby Gould, he was brought to Highfield Road in the summer of 1992 when his dad was appointed manager for the second time. A goalkeeper, Jonny had no league experience other than a few games for Halifax, and was understudy to Oggy. Injury to the big man gave Jonny his opportunity and he made his debut in a thrilling 5-1 win over Liverpool. By the end of the season he had ousted Oggy, axed for the first time in nine years, and retained his place the following season.
Then after his dad’s departure in October 1993 he was relegated to the reserves, playing just one game in eighteen months. When Ron Atkinson signed John Filan in March 1995 he was out of favour. His final Coventry appearance was as a substitute at Molineux in the League Cup in 1995 when Oggy was sent off and in March 1996 Gould moved to Bradford City.
Between 1997 and 2003 Gould made over 150 appearances for Celtic, first as regular No.1 and later vying with Rab Douglas and ex-City man Magnus Hedman as first choice. He won three Scottish championship medals, three League Cup winners’ medals as well as a Scottish Cup winners medal in 2001. He won two caps for Scotland whilst at Parkhead, against Liechtenstein and Australia before transferring to Preston in 2003.Â
