Many fans would argue that Ray’s arrival from Aston Villa for £35,000 in the summer of 1977 was a major reason for City’s resurgence that season. The veteran right-winger was only at the club seven months but he provided great service for Mick Ferguson and Ian Wallace and was missed when he left for Washington Diplomats in March 1978. His most memorable goal was the winner in the 5-4 Christmas thriller against Norwich. After retiring from playing he coached Southampton and Oxford and was successful as a manager at Walsall but less so at Bristol Rovers.
