A native of the East Midlands, Bytheway only achieved a regular League first team place with Mansfield. His career prior to Field Mill was one of unfulfilled promise. He played wing-half at WBA, but only appeared 16 times in 6 seasons. Signed by Harry Storer, his 9 appearances for City came at outside-left as replacement for the injured Percy Richards. His career was hampered by a succession of serious injuries, breaking a leg three times, an ankle twice, plus his collarbone and his wrist.
