The Welsh-born forward played for Northampton Town from 1953 to 1956, scoring on his debut at Bournemouth in April 1955 in a 1-0 win.  After 18 games and 5 goals he joined City in a straight swap for reserve centre forward Charlie Dutton in March 1956.  Ron went straight into the first team for the home game with Southampton and promptly scored in the very first minute.  City won 2-0 but Ron’s City career was brief.

He played a further twelve games , scoring one more goal, before being released and joining Torquay United in July 1957 where he played five games before moving into non league soccer with Bedford, Rugby Town and Rushden Town.  In 1964 after leaving Rushden Town he went to Wellingborough and for three years coached their second team, “Newmans chicks”, as they were known.  Ron was in insurance for most of his working life, even when he was playing, and retired from the Britannic Assurance in 1996.  As a boy Ron represented Wales schoolboys at rugby as a scrum half.
