Tommy Crawley
Signed by Harry Storer from Preston in 1935 the strongly built centre-forward had built a reputation in Scotland with Hamilton and Motherwell and was cover for the legendary Clarrie Bourton. In the last season before World War II Tom was establishing himself in the side and netted almost a goal a game. His best days came during war-time football, he scored over 70 goals including eight in a 10-2 win over Luton in 1940, and five in an 8-0 Christmas Day 1943 victory over West Brom. After the war he had lost his pace and played briefly as stand-in centre-half before hanging up his boots in 1948. His son Ian Crawley was an outstanding non-league player, scoring goals at Wembley for both VS Rugby and Telford, who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
