Signed from his home town club, Maskill was a useful right half who was highly thought of by Albert Evans, but once James Kerr had settled in as manager, Michael McIlvanney was preferred. When City were transferred to Division 3(South), all players were offered reduced terms. Maskill rejected them and linked up with his former team mate George Thompson who was player-manager of Caernarvon Town, where he won a Welsh National League Championship medal. He was re-signed for City by James McIntyre, but left for Scarborough after an unsuccessful time.
