In the "Stormy Period" of the early 1920's, there were very few stabilising influences in the City team. One of the few reliable and long serving players was full back Jackie Randle. A local lad, he took over from Jimmy Lawrence at left back at the start of the 1923-24 season. He was a revelation and kept his more experienced colleague out of the side.

This stocky, tough tackling full back was as adept at right back as on the left. Possibly his most memorable game for City was at Ashton Gate on 18th September 1926. He scored a noteworthy hat-trick - all of them in his own net - as City lost 0-3! In November 1927, Randle was sold to 1st Division Birmingham, which eased City's money problems and he quickly settled down in the top flight. He played 116 games for The Blues, but missed his chance of a Wembley appearance in the 1931 FA Cup final. In his last two and a half seasons at St Andrews, he only played 10 matches and was sold to Bournemouth for whom he made 28 appearances.
