Smith was a reserve wing half who got a look in only when Smailes and Stokes were injured. He was an energetic player who was noted for his stamina. New manager Harry Storer wanted to resign him but he refused terms.

It took him 6 months to find a team, before playing for 2 years at Southern League Merthyr. He was signed by Stoke in January 1934, but could not break into the first team, then played 5 matches for Forest before leaving the League.
