Ball's career hit its peak at Bury. In 202 League matches he scored 81 goals and earned an England cap against Ireland in October 1927, but he was almost lost to the game. He had played 6 Division One matches for Sheffield United and 25 games for Bristol Rovers, and it took Bury to revive his League career where he rewarded them by scoring 14 goals as they were promoted to Division 1.
