Jack Phillips
Welshman Phillips had come to Highfield Road with a reputation for scoring goals. After being rejected by WBA and playing 8 games at Southend, Phillips scored 32 goals in 57 league games for a struggling Merthyr side.
He continued his scoring at Brentford, notching 22 goals in 29 games. Transferred to Bristol Rovers in September 1928, Phillips scored 39 goals in 68 games. Despite his scoring record, Phillips came to City as back-up for Jimmy Loughlin. After great displays in the reserves, Phillips forced his way into the first team, scoring on his debut and bagging 18 in 28 league and cup games. At the end of the season, Harry Storer released Phillips. This proved to be sound judgement as his replacement was Clarrie Burton.
