Stokes was signed by James McIntyre as a promis-ing half back, having appeared 13 times for Notts County, and clocked up most of his appearances as replacement for the injured Jimmy Baker. He had an extended run when Baker was pushed into the centre half position in December 1930. Stokes was released by new manager Harry Storer as one of a wholesale set of changes and signed for Watford, where he played 42 times.
