Terry Gibson’s scoring record stands comparison with any striker in the top-flight era. Despite being an outstanding England youth international with Tottenham he had to leave White Hart Lane to make his mark at first team level. Bobby Gould paid £100,000 for him in 1983 and he was an immediate success and finished top scorer three seasons running. In his first season he played alongside a succession of centre-forwards but just kept on scoring goals including a hat-trick against Liverpool, the first conceded by the Reds in 11 years, in a famous 4-0 victory.
Later the 5 ft 4 in striker was paired with Cyrille Regis, the two combined well and his goals were vital in the perennial relegation battles. At the start of the 1985-86 season he scored in seven consecutive games, a club record, and his value on the transfer market was rising. A move to Manchester United, in part exchange for Alan Brazil valuing Gibson at £650,000, was a disaster for the player. After less than 30 games he was on the move to Wimbledon to team up with his old boss Bobby Gould and played his part in the Dons 1988 FA Cup final victory.
