Briggs arrived at Highfield Road with a formidable scoring record having topped Division Two’s list the previous season with 40 goals and netting hat-tricks in successive seasons against City. Harry Storer signed the big, strong striker for a club record £19,550 when City were top of Division Two and he scored on his debut. His arrival however caused problems in the dressing room and he was never accepted by his colleagues and the fans. City slipped out of the promotion race and Briggs was dropped. Early the following season he was sold to Birmingham. A year later he was on the move again signing for Blackburn where he regained his scoring touch and netted 140 goals in 194 league games including seven in one game against Bristol Rovers. In 1958 he returned briefly to Grimsby before becoming player-manager of Glentoran for two years. In later life Tommy, a trained butcher, returned to Grimsby and was a rep for an electrical company up to his sudden death.
