A brave goalkeeper signed by Jesse Carver from Snowdown Colliery at the same time as George Curtis in 1955 after appearing as a guest in two friendly games. He was understudy to Reg Matthews and made his debut on the day Reg made his England debut. When Matthews was sold in November 1956 Alf took over as first choice but was released the following summer and returned to Kent to play for first Margate and later Gillingham and Tunbridge Wells under Harry Barratt.
