Peter Barnes
The enigmatic left-winger made his name at Manchester City and won most of his 22 England caps and a League Cup winners medal in 1976 in a golden youth before leaving for West Brom at the age of 22. Bobby Gould signed him for Coventry for £65,000 in October 1984 after unhappy spells at West Brom, Leeds and Real Betis in Spain. Despite some dazzling moments (including an amazing dribble against Southampton captured by television cameras) Peter’s career was in a downward spiral and his erratic form could not be accommodated in City’s relegation threatened team. Following Don Mackay’s installation as manager he was rarely picked and was sold to Manchester United for £50,000 in June 1985.
The rest of his career was nomadic and he played in such varied places as Hull, Malta and the US Indoor League. Peter is now a pundit on Manchester City for local radio as well as running a soccer coaching business. Peter was the son of Manchester City player Ken Barnes and they are the only father and son to score a First Division hat-trick since WW2.
