Smith came into the professional game late, signing for Birmingham at the age of 24. He played 12 games for The Blues before signing for City, and later took over from Charlie Bisby, equipping himself well, and earning a Division 3(South) Champions medal. He continued in Division 2, but manager Harry Storer was always looking to improve the team and Smith had to make way for Walter Metcalf. He retired shortly after the outbreak of war.
