Given a free transfer by Manchester City, Stoddart was bought by James Kerr and started well, scoring on his debut, but was replaced by Walter Johnstone.
He came back for the last 3 games of the season as a centre half. He was sold by new boss James McIntyre to Southampton in a deal which brought Tommy Allen and Bill Henderson to City. He did not impress at Southampton and moved on to Bristol Rovers to gain first team action.
