He had only played 2 League games - for Brentford in 1925-26 - before signing for City as a replacement for the injured Jack Thomson, who was to replace Stanford at City. He was signed as cover for regular goalkeeper Jimmy Newton, and injury to the latter allowed Stanford an extended run of games.

He was then dropped in November 1927 after being in City's goal during the 1-9 crushing defeat at Millwall (which was City's worst defeat in the League at the time). He suffered a serious knee injury playing for the reserves in January 1928, which forced him out of the professional game.
