Local youngster O'Brien came through City's local scouting system and impressed Harry Storer with his hard working displays. He played his first 3 games out of position and took his chance to make the right half place his own in September 1931. After losing his place to Jimmy Baker, he played his last games at outside right, from which position he scored all of his goals for City. He made 193 appearances for Watford before the War, and guested for City during hostilities whilst he lived and worked in Coventry.
